A new ice rink and indoor synthetic turf field has been approved at the Thayer Academy South Athletic Campus on Washington Street.

BRAINTREE − The developer of an indoor sports complex planned for the Thayer Academy South Athletic Campus said he hopes to begin construction as soon as possible.

“We’re ready to go,” said Brian DeVellis of ESG Inc./Edge Sports Group. “We anticipate being open by the end of the year.”

The planning board Tuesday night approved a special permit and a site plan for the facility at 1515 Washington St. which would include two ice rinks and an indoor, synthetic turf playing field. The town council approved a zoning change for the facility at its June 5 meeting.

The company will build and operate the facility on land leased from the private school, which is now the site of three, synthetic turf playing fields. The facility would pay property taxes to the town. The hours of operation will be 6 a.m. to 12 midnight, and the academy would have scheduling preference.

Carl Johnson, a lawyer representing the school, told the town council last week the academy it does not have the expertise to manage a facility of this type. He said it would be an asset to the town, and could be leased to youth sports organizations and other groups.

“There is a huge demand for these facilities,” Johnson told the council. “I think it is a win-win for the town. This will be an outstanding facility.”
